How much more does a concept cafe cost in Tokyo than in Osaka? To answer it with numbers instead of anecdotes, we took the 513 cafes listed on MaidLink and tallied the 207 that publish their prices on an official website or official X account. All prices were checked between September 23 and October 4, 2026. Menus change, so always check the cafe's page (it shows the date we checked) and the price board in the shop.

The numbers in one minute

  • Two pricing systems dominate: timed sets with drinks included (114 cafes, 55%) and an hourly cover plus orders (88 cafes, 43%). Five cafes charge no cover at all.
  • Hourly cover: median about ¥1,000 an hour. The single most common price is ¥880, used by 23 cafes.
  • Timed sets: median about ¥2,900 per 60 minutes, with half of cafes between roughly ¥2,200 and ¥3,500. The most common set is ¥3,000 for 60 minutes.
  • Tokyo sets cost more than Osaka's: a median of about ¥3,100 an hour against ¥2,200.
  • 18 cafes state a service charge; 11 of them charge 10%, and the highest is 20%.
  • 21 cafes list separate prices for men and women, with women paying a median of 20% less.

City by city

Medians, with the number of cafes behind each figure:

  • Tokyo (Akihabara, Ikebukuro, Shinjuku, Shibuya, Ueno, Nakano, Tama): hourly cover about ¥940 (30 cafes); timed sets about ¥3,100 per hour (40 cafes).
  • Osaka (Osaka and Nipponbashi): hourly cover ¥880 (11 cafes); timed sets about ¥2,200 per hour (11 cafes).
  • Nagoya: hourly cover ¥900 (11 cafes). Nagoya is mostly hourly-cover cafes.
  • Other cities: timed sets about ¥2,500 per hour (42 cafes).

The hourly cover is nearly identical everywhere, around ¥1,000. The gap is in the evening drink sets, where an hour in Tokyo costs about ¥900 more than in Osaka.

Hourly cover cafes

This is the classic maid cafe model: a cover per hour, plus food and drinks. 53 cafes explicitly require at least one order per hour. Examples:

Budget about ¥1,600–¥2,000 for an hour with one drink, or ¥3,000–¥4,000 with food and a cheki photo.

Timed drink sets

Evening concept cafes and bars usually sell blocks of 30 to 60 minutes with drinks included, and extensions are sold in the same blocks:

Drinks for the cast, cheki, nominations and extensions are where bills grow, so ask the price of each extra first.

Service charge and tax

Of the 18 cafes that state a service charge, 11 charge 10%, three charge 15% and four charge 20%. If a price says "税別" or "+TAX", Japan's 10% consumption tax comes on top. Some cafes go the other way and state "no charge, no tax, no service fee".

Women's prices

21 cafes publish lower prices for women, a median 20% below the men's price and up to half price. For example, Sugar Sweet in Akihabara lists 40 minutes of drinks at ¥3,000 for men and ¥1,500 for women, and Stars @ Belle in Yokohama ¥3,000 and ¥2,400. If you're visiting as a couple or with friends, that's worth knowing.

Cheki

Few cafes publish cheki prices: we could confirm six, and five of them charge ¥1,000–¥1,600. Some shops charge ¥2,000 or more, so check the menu.

Sample budgets per person

  • An hour at a daytime maid cafe: ¥1,600–¥2,000
  • With food and a cheki: ¥3,000–¥4,000
  • An hour at an evening concept bar: about ¥3,000 plus service and tax; ¥5,000 or more with drinks for the cast and cheki
  • A long night with extensions: it can pass ¥10,000
